God is Not…a Hater

When disaster strikes, do you ask, “Why does God hate me?”

Does God cause hurricanes to punish people for sin? In this continuation of our Net Church sermon series, “What God is Not,” we cover an analysis of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the problem with seeing unfortunate circumstance as judgment.

This online sermon series continues our discussion of Apophatic Theology or negative theology, looking at many things God is not. Ryan May answers the question many ask when faced with difficult life circumstances, “Why does God hate me?” God is Not…a Hater.

Does God cause disasters and unfortunate circumstances? If he does, why would he cause them? Are unfortunate circumstances judgment against us? Is it okay to ask, “Why does God hate me?”

From ancient times to today, the belief that we must appease the gods or they will strike us has been pervasive. Ryan May takes a look at passages from Job, the Sermon on the Mount, and then John to find an answer. Is God more like Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or is He merciful and full of grace?

“God loves human beings. God loves the world. Not an ideal human, but human beings as they are; not an ideal world, but the real world. What we find repulsive in their opposition to God, what we shrink back from with pain and hostility, namely, real human beings, the real world, this is for God the ground of unfathomable love.”
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer, A Year With Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Rather than beating people over the head with scripture during a time of crisis, maybe there’s a better way. If there is, what can this look like in your life? How can you live it now?

Join Ryan May as he responds to comments from Kirk Cameron and others about God’s judgment through natural disasters.
